MLO Pre-Licensure FAQ

Plain-English answers before you enroll.

Use these answers to understand the national course, state-specific education, completion requirements, and NMLS credit reporting.

Course Fit

Is this course NMLS-approved?

Yes. 1 Accelerated Education is approved to provide NMLS mortgage loan originator education, and the 20 Hour SAFE Comprehensive course is the national 20-hour MLO pre-licensure course offered by this tenant.

What does the 20-hour national course include?

The national course includes 3 hours of federal law, 3 hours of ethics, 2 hours of non-traditional mortgage lending, and 12 hours of electives. The curriculum covers mortgage regulations, consumer-focused practices, loan programs, disclosures, qualification fundamentals, mortgage math, and core origination processes.

Do I also need state-specific education?

Some states require additional state-specific education on top of the national 20-hour SAFE course. Use the state finder to see currently available course paths, then confirm your current state requirements before enrolling.

Completion and Reporting

How is the online course completed?

The course is delivered in an online instructor-led format with a defined course offering period. Students complete timed content, required discussions, section quizzes, case studies, and the comprehensive final exam in the course sequence.

What score do I need on the course final exam?

The course final exam requires a minimum passing score of 70%. The course allows a maximum of 3 final exam attempts. If a passing score is not achieved after 3 attempts, the student must retake the course before credit may be awarded.

When is my NMLS credit reported?

NMLS credit is reported only after the student has fully completed all course requirements, including required instructional time, quizzes, discussions, case studies, and a passing final exam. Credit is submitted to NMLS within 7 calendar days after successful course completion. Students must provide a valid individual NMLS ID when required.

Does course completion guarantee licensing or passing the SAFE MLO test?

No. Course completion is an education step. Licensing approval, test performance, sponsorship, background checks, and state-specific requirements depend on the learner and the applicable regulator. No course can guarantee a license, job, income, or test outcome.
